Navigating the Frontiers of Health Law in an Evolving Europe

As Europe confronts a range of health challenges—spanning from an aging population and mental health issues to antimicrobial resistance, infectious and lifestyle-related diseases, environmental health concerns, and the equitable distribution of healthcare resources—health law frameworks must evolve to support essential transformations and innovations. This includes adapting to advancements in digitalization, technology, and care delivery to enhance healthcare services, improve patient outcomes, and ensure robust protections for public health and individual rights during times of stability and turbulence.

By emphasizing the “Frontiers of Health Law,” the conference addresses emerging issues such as new individual and public health threats, technological advancements, and the driving forces of major societal trends. It also revisits core health law principles—such as human dignity, integrity, and privacy—within an evolving European context, illustrating how these values are gaining new dimensions over time. With its focus on an “Evolving Europe,” the conference not only tackles socio-economic and cultural challenges but also opens discussions on the regulatory and systemic shifts needed in European health law. These include rethinking regulatory approaches within a diverse European legal landscape, reshaping public health systems, including priorities and funding allocation, and clarifying the roles of both public and private stakeholders, while emphasizing collaboration and incentives. This includes exploring new partnerships and reevaluating protections and incentives, such as those offered by intellectual property law and the limitations outlined by competition law.

This conference aims to bring together health law scholars, policymakers, legal professionals, ethicists, and healthcare practitioners to discuss and shape the future of European health law. It will offer participants insightful discussions on legal and policy development, compliance, and strategies to protect public health while safeguarding individual rights across Europe’s diverse legal landscape.
